As we approach his birth anniversary, the world gears up with great enthusiasm to commemorate this remarkable figure. Notably, this day is also celebrated globally as the International Day of Non-violence, a testament to Gandhi’s unwavering commitment to peace, truth, and non-violence.

Gandhi Jayanti 2023 Date:

In 2023, Gandhi Jayanti falls on a Monday, and it marks the 154th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Gandhi Jayanti 2023 History and Significance

Born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi shared his birthday with another eminent Indian politician and statesman, Lal Bahadur Shastri.

However, Gandhi’s journey took a transformative turn during his experiences in South Africa, propelling him to become the linchpin of India’s independence movement.

Through successful Satyagraha and Ahimsa movements, he steered India towards liberation from British colonial rule.

His life was a resolute commitment to the struggle for freedom, and his legacy lies in his non-violent approach, which profoundly influenced the Indian civil rights movement. Tragically, his life was cut short when he was assassinated by Nathuram Godse on January 30, 1948.

October 2 is a national holiday in India, a day when the nation pays homage to Mahatma Gandhi and his teachings of non-violence and tolerance. It serves as an occasion to promote global peace, harmony, and unity. Celebrations are widespread, encompassing schools, colleges, government offices, and non-governmental organizations. Cultural events, patriotic songs, dances, and speeches echoing Gandhi’s wisdom filled the day. People also begin their day by listening to Gandhi’s favorite hymn, “Raghupati Raghava.”

International Day of Non-violence:

In 2007, the United Nations General Assembly designated October 2 as the International Day of Non-Violence to honor Gandhi’s enduring principles. The United Nations sees this day as an opportunity to spread the message of non-violence through education and public awareness. It reinforces the universal relevance of non-violence and emphasizes the pursuit of a culture of peace, tolerance, understanding, and non-violence.

  • “Strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will.”
  • “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.”
  • “Non-cooperation with evil is as much a duty as cooperation with good.”
  • “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”

Gandhi Jayanti 2023 Speech:

Good morning/afternoon everyone!

Respected Principal, Esteemed Teachers, Dear Fellow Students, and Invited Guests

Today, we assemble here to commemorate the extraordinary legacy of Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his birth anniversary. Gandhi Jayanti is not merely a day of respite from our academic pursuits; it is a day for introspection on the principles he championed.

Gandhi ardently believed in the potency of truth and non-violence. He demonstrated that, even in the most challenging circumstances, transformative change can be achieved through peaceful means. His life serves as an enduring lesson in resilience and unwavering determination.

As students, there are invaluable insights we can glean from Gandhi’s teachings. We can navigate conflicts with wisdom and eschew violence as a solution. We can continually aspire to uphold honesty and authenticity in our every endeavor.

Allow me to conclude this tribute with Mahatma Gandhi’s timeless words, “You must be the change you want to see in the world.” Therefore, let us commence today on our journey as the architects of change for a better tomorrow.
