Anime Movie Review

When Jujutsu Kaisen 0 was released, it wasn’t just a simple prequel—it turned out to be an emotional rollercoaster, a deep dive into the past of the Jujutsu Kaisen universe. We got to see the roots of some of our favorite characters and experienced a whole new emotional layer to a story we already loved. But what made this movie so special? The powerful themes of love, loss, and growth were all tied together with some of the BEST animation and action scenes you’ll ever see.

Okkotsu Yuta: The Reluctant Hero

At the heart of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is Yuta Okkotsu, a young man cursed with an immense burden. Yuta starts off as a broken, powerless student, haunted by the curse of his childhood friend, Rika Orimoto.

Okkotsu Yuta was a regular boy before his life was tragically altered by the death of his childhood friend, Rika Orimoto. After she died in a car accident, Rika’s spirit became a powerful and malevolent curse. This curse clung to Yuta, manifesting as a twisted version of Rika, who both protected him and sought to destroy anyone who harmed him. The curse is unusually strong and far more potent than typical curses, which is why Yuta is drawn into the world of jujutsu sorcery.

At the start of the story, Yuta is overwhelmed by the curse and doesn’t know how to control it, which makes him seem like a danger to himself and others. However, as he becomes part of Jujutsu High and starts training under Gojo Satoru, he begins to understand his power.

Meeting Gojo Satoru

Meeting Gojo Satoru

Yuta’s journey really starts to unfold when Yuta meets Gojo Satoru. Under the guidance of Gojo, he learns to harness the curse. Gojo takes Yuta under his wing, not just as a mentor but almost like a parent. And in a way, Gojo does feel like a foster parent. He’s the one who steps in to guide Yuta when he has no idea how to control Rika’s curse.

Gojo Satoru is one of the most powerful jujutsu sorcerers in the world, and he’s also one of the most intriguing characters in the Jujutsu Kaisen 0 movie. When Yuta first meets him, Gojo is a carefree, sometimes cocky, always enigmatic mentor. He’s the type of guy who doesn’t seem to take things seriously, but deep down, he’s incredibly dedicated to helping Yuta grow.

Meeting Maki, Inumaki, and Panda

While Yuta is adjusting to life at Jujutsu High, he meets the other first-year students—Maki Zenin, Toge Inumaki, and Panda

Maki, with her fierce determination and incredible skill, immediately stands out. Despite being part of the prestigious Zenin family, Maki is often seen as an outsider because she doesn’t have cursed energy. This underdog quality makes her relatable, and you can’t help but root for her. Her bond with Yuta grows over time, as they both struggle with the expectations placed on them. There’s a rawness to their relationship, and it’s evident that Maki sees a lot of herself in Yuta.

Then there’s Toge Inumaki, who communicates using only a few specific words due to his cursed speech ability. He’s quiet, and mysterious, and adds a touch of comic relief to the group. And, of course, there’s Panda—a literal talking panda with a soul. His quirky, easygoing nature helps balance the more intense moments, giving Yuta a solid support system in this crazy new world.

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 clearly demonstrates the friendships Yuta builds with these characters are important, not just for the story but for Yuta’s personal growth. Through their interactions, he learns what it means to be a part of something bigger than himself, to have people who care for him, and to fight for something beyond just himself.

Suguru Geto: The Villain with a Vision

But just as Yuta starts finding his footing, the peace is shattered by the arrival of Geto Suguru. Once a student at Jujutsu High himself, Geto has now turned to a dark path, seeking to eradicate all non-sorcerers and establish a world where curses reign supreme. His ideology stems from a deep-seated belief that jujutsu sorcerers are the only ones who deserve to live, and this puts him on a direct collision course with the jujutsu sorcerers who protect humanity.

Geto’s declaration of war against all jujutsu sorcerers sets the stage for an epic conflict. His plan to destroy the jujutsu society and reshape the world according to his own vision feels inevitable and terrifying.

Epic Battles: Gojo’s Power and Yuta’s Growth

As the story progresses, we see some of the most intense and visually stunning battles in Jujutsu Kaisen 0. The first major battle involves Gojo facing off against Geto’s forces. Gojo’s power is unmatched, and even though he only uses about 5% (not exaggerating) of his abilities, his sheer strength is enough to take down enemies left and right. The fight is fast-paced, dynamic, and full of jaw-dropping moments. Gojo, despite his carefree personality, shows just how dangerous he can be when he’s serious.

Yuta’s transformation is one of the movie’s strongest points. He goes from being a scared, reluctant sorcerer to someone who can face his fears and take control of his power. The turning point comes when he’s faced with Geto in an intense one-on-one battle. Yuta has grown, both in terms of his cursed energy and his emotional maturity, but it’s during this fight that we see him truly come into his own.

The Confession: A Heartbreaking Moment

Jujutsu Kaisen

The final moments of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 are some of the most emotional in the entire series. As Yuta faces off against Geto, he confesses his feelings to Rika, the curse that has been haunting him. He tells her he can’t keep holding on, and that it’s time to set her free. His words hang in the air, heavy with finality, before he confesses his love for Rika in a way that sends shockwaves down her spine. His declaration unlocks her full potential, unleashing a surge of power like never before. Rika, in her cursed form, responds with an emotional declaration of love: “I love you, Yuta.”

It’s a heart-wrenching moment that captures everything Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is about. Yuta’s confession, and Rika’s acceptance, is a moment of release for both of them. It’s the emotional climax of the movie, and it’s one of those scenes that leaves you feeling both broken and healed at the same time.

This moment is what makes Jujutsu Kaisen 0 so memorable. It’s not just about the epic battles or the complex characters; it’s about the emotional depth that ties everything together. Yuta’s journey is about letting go, facing his fears, and growing into the person he’s meant to be. And Rika’s curse, while tragic, becomes a symbol of that growth.

Final Revelation

Geto has lost. He escapes and runs into Gojo. After a few exchanges of conversations and the air is thick with tension as both Geto and Gojo eventually go their separate ways.

When Gojo regroups with Yuta, it is revealed that the curse of Rika was not just a random accident. Rika’s love for Yuta was so strong that it transcended death, and this intense emotion turned her into a curse that bound her to him. The curse also manifested Yuta’s guilt, grief, and unresolved feelings.

By confronting these emotions, Yuta gains control over the curse and breaks free from Rika’s grip, releasing her from the curse and allowing her to rest peacefully.

Who Exactly Is Okkotsu Yuta?

In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Gojo Satoru alludes to Yuta Okkotsu being a descendant of Sugawara no Michizane, one of the three legendary vengeful spirits, a powerful and significant figure in the world of jujutsu sorcery. This revelation ties into Yuta’s immense potential and the strength of his cursed energy, far beyond that of most sorcerers.

The connection to this mysterious ancestor is hinted at throughout the story but is not fully explained in detail in the movie. However, it’s suggested that Yuta’s family lineage may be one of the reasons he can wield such overwhelming cursed energy, even though he doesn’t initially understand or control it.

In the manga, there is a further exploration of Yuta’s heritage. It is implied that his family had a special connection to the jujutsu world, possibly having been involved in significant events or possessing ancient knowledge and power.

A Beautifully Crafted Masterpiece

Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is a beautifully crafted, emotionally charged story that adds incredible depth to the Jujutsu Kaisen universe. The animation is stunning, the action scenes are intense, and the character development is off the charts.

The movie’s themes of love, sacrifice, and personal growth are what truly set it apart. It’s a story that resonates on a deep emotional level, and even though we get epic battles and powerful sorcerers, the real magic lies in the connections between the characters. Gojo, Yuta, Rika, Maki, and even Geto all have rich, complex motivations that make them more than just figures in a fight.
