India at Dakar 2026: Historic Stage Win for Takale, Heartbreak for Harith Noah

Indian motorsport reached a historic milestone at the start of the 2026 Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia. For the first time ever, an Indian driver stood on the top step of a stage podium in the car category. However, the celebrations were dampened by news that India’s top motorcycle rider, Harith Noah, was forced to withdraw after a serious crash.

The 48th edition of the world's toughest rally began this January in the coastal city of Yanbu. With nearly 8,000 kilometers of desert ahead, the Indian contingent entered the race with more momentum and factory support than ever before.

Key Takeaways

Dakar 2026 Indian Interest - Key Takeaways
Key Takeaways
  • Historic Victory: Sanjay Takale became the first Indian to win a Dakar stage in the four-wheel category (Dakar Classic, H3 Class).
  • Major Setback: 2024 Rally 2 champion Harith Noah retired during the first full stage after a crash in heavy dust.
  • Factory Dominance: Hero MotoSports remains a top contender, with Ross Branch and Nacho Cornejo both finishing in the Top 10 of Stage 1.
  • Privateer Pride: Jatin Jain successfully navigated a "brutal" opening stage to continue his journey as an Indian privateer.

Sanjay Takale Makes History

The standout story of the opening days belongs to 57-year-old veteran Sanjay Takale. Competing in the Dakar Classic category—reserved for legendary off-road vehicles from the 80s and 90s—Takale dominated the H3 class.

Driving a Toyota Land Cruiser HDJ100, Takale won both the Prologue and Stage 1. While the Classic category focuses on "regularity" (maintaining specific speeds) rather than pure speed, the win is a massive moment for India. It marks the first time an Indian name has appeared at the top of a four-wheel timing sheet at Dakar.

Heartbreak for Harith Noah

On the two-wheel side, the news was more somber. Harith Noah, who made history in 2024 by winning the Rally 2 class, saw his 2026 campaign end almost before it began.

Representing the Sherco TVS Factory team, Noah suffered a crash during Stage 1. Thick dust from other competitors made visibility nearly zero, leading to the accident. According to his team, Noah was flown to a hospital in Jeddah for medical examinations after suffering a back injury. This early exit is a blow to Indian fans who expected the Kerala-born rider to challenge for another podium.

Hero MotoSports: The Indian Powerhouse

While individual riders faced mixed luck, the Indian manufacturer Hero MotoSports Team Rally showed why they are now a global force. This year marks the team’s 10th consecutive appearance at Dakar.

Their lead rider, Ross Branch (known as the "Kalahari Ferrari"), actually set the fastest time in Stage 1 but was dropped to 7th place due to a six-minute speeding penalty. His teammate, Nacho Cornejo, finished 6th. Both riders remain within five minutes of the overall lead, keeping Hero’s dream of an overall Dakar victory very much alive.

Background and Context

The Dakar Rally is the most grueling motorsport event on Earth. Since moving to Saudi Arabia in 2020, the race has become longer and more technical. For India, the journey began in 2015 when CS Santosh became the first Indian to finish the rally.

In the decade since, India has evolved from being a "participant" to a "competitor." With Hero MotoSports finishing 2nd overall in 2024 and Harith Noah winning his class that same year, the expectations for 2026 are at an all-time high. The event now features a mix of factory-backed superstars and gritty privateers like Jatin Jain, who finished Stage 1 in 109th place despite calling the terrain "brutal."

What Experts Are Saying

Motorsport analysts note that India's presence at Dakar has shifted. "We are no longer just happy to see an Indian flag at the finish line," says one veteran rally reporter. "With Takale winning stages and Hero fighting for the overall win, India is now a major player in the world of rally-raid."

As the rally moves deeper into the Saudi desert toward Riyadh, all eyes will be on Hero MotoSports to see if they can bring home the ultimate trophy by January 17th.
